Tomato Rice, also known as Tomato rice/ Thakkali Sadam in Tamil is though originally from South India, has become part of every culture. And each region had its own version of recipes. I decided to prepare in my style using freshly grounded spices, Tomatoes, Onions and Ginger-Garlic and it really turned out to be delicious and flavorsome. Serve Tomato rice / Thakkali Sadam recipe along with Raita.

Tomato Biryani is an easy & hassle free one pot meal. Its a spicy and flavorful variety rice that tastes great with a simple raita and papad. This is a perfect lunch box menu too. For us this is a perfect lunch menu on weekends It is a variation of Mixed Veg Biryani. The major difference between normal veg biryani and Tomato Biryani are, in Tomato Biryani I use fennel seeds, green chili, Homemade Garam Masala, and tomato. Tomatoes are good in vitamin c and tomatoes can be taken in many forms such as tomato bath, tomato rice and there are many other tomato recipes that are good with rice such as tomato Pappu, tomato Rasam, tomato chicken curry, tomato pickle, tomato rice.

  1. First we prepare the fresh masala paste ,for that in a mixie jar add all ingredients under the 'To prepare fresh masala'.

  2. Grind a fine paste using little water

  3. Next wash & soak the rice for about 15 minutes.

  4. peel the tomato skin using peeler.

  5. Heat the pressure cooker add  oil & ghee.

  6. Temper with mustard seeds.

  7. once its splutters Add onion then sauté the onion until turns transparent.

  8. Then add coriander leaves & mint leaves, sauté then for about 2-3 minutes.

  9. Now add grounded fresh masala paste & turmeric powder. sauté it until raw smell goes off.

  10. Add the green chilies (adjust the green chili for your spicy level).sauté it in medium flame until oil separates.

  11. Now add tomatoes & required salt. Continue to cook until the mixture looks like a semi-thick paste.

  12. Add water ,once the water start to boil add soaked rice, gently mix it well.

  13. Pressure cook about 1 whistle in medium flame.(10 minutes)

  14. once the pressure release naturally open the cooker .gently mix the rice .

  15. Serve Tomato Rice / Thakkali Sadam recipe along with Raita.

Note

  • If using the Instant Pot, put the lid on and switch the function to pressure cook on high for 6 to 8 minutes, then allow a natural release after 10 minutes.
