Red Aval / Poha / Avalakki / Flattened rice / Beaten rice is made from red rice and hence is a healthier version. Red poha Kozhukattai is a popular dish from South India. Both salt and sweet versions make healthy snacks for children as well as elders. Red Rice Poha is a good source of fibre. It is also rich in natural trace minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium. Red rice is filed with anti-oxidants and does not undergo excessive polishing like white rice and so it is rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals remains intact. Including it in regular diet makes a healthier choice. you can replace white poha for this recipe. The thin variety of red poha does not require soaking. You can wash twice as you do for thin white poha. This is a very healthy steamed snack/tiffin or even a breakfast or dinner. Very flavourful and easy to make and tastes awesome.

How to make Poha Kozhukattai Recipe

Take red poha add in blender to make coarse powder.

In a mixie jar add 30 minutes soaked urad dal, and pulse grind it.

To seasoning, heat the pan with oil, add mustard seeds and split urad dal.

Add chana dal, Hing powder allow it splutters.

Add chopped onions and table salt sauté for a minute.

Now add chopped green chillies, curry leaves coriander leaves and grated coconut.

Sauté in medium flame for 2 mins.

Add 2.25 cups of water.

Add roughly ground soaked urad dal.

Allow to boil in low flame for 3 mins.

Now add crushed red poha by keep on stirring.

Again, keep on stirring in low flame it’ll form a thick batter.

Heat the steamer (idli pan) with water.

Once start boiling, keep the poha kozhukattai dough plate.
Cover and cook in low flame for 5 mins.

Yummy Poha Urad dal kozhukattai is ready to serve.

- You can add any vegetables, but chop it finely before adding it.
