For Poorana Kozhukattai/Modak, is a must for Vinayagar chaturthi. We make usually mothagam with channa dal plus coconut pooranam. This time, I wanted to post kozhukattai recipe with roasted chana dal & thenga pooranam.we need to prepare the outer shell and the stuffing (Pooranam) separately. The outer shell is made with Rice Dough and can be prepared in different ways. It is really simple recipe with less ingredients but you get addicted for the taste.

  1. Add it to the flour with salt and mix well. Use a spatula for mixing.

  2. For the dough, bring water to boil and let it boil for a minute.

  3. You may need lots of water. So make sure you boil enough.

  4. After it becomes warm, knead to a smooth dough and keep covered.

  5. For the pooranam, Take a bowl add Grated coconut.

  6. Then add Roasted Chana dal powder.

  7. Now add thick jaggery syrup if you don't have add jaggery powder too. Mix it well.

  8. Now pooranam is ready.

  9. Make small cups out of the dough, refer this VIDEO for learning how to shape the cup. Fill with the pooranam.

  10. Repeat and finish the Kozhukattai(s).

  11. Boil water in steamer and arrange the modaks in the steaming plate and cook for 5 minutes. Or until they are cooked.

  12. The yummy Thengai Poorana Kozhukattai is ready to serve and for neivedhyam

Note

  • You can reduce jaggery quantity as needed to suit your taste.
  • To get the outer layer soft, its important to boil water well for making the dough. Dough should be almost cooked with the hot water so that you get non sticky pliable dough
  • To check if the Kozhukattai are done, it will be shiny and changed in color.
  • If you find it difficult to make rice cups, you can use Kozhukattai mould.
