Ulundu Bonda / Urad Dal Bonda/ Tea Time Snacks Recipe


Medhu bonda is a popular South Indian snack food made with lentils, chopped fresh coconut, fresh herbs and vibrant spices. The ingredients are combined to create a thick batter, and are then deep fried to make crisp, soft and fluffy fritters. They are round fried fritters that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and brimming with flavourful seasonings. Bonda can be made in several ways; this one is an easy version with simple ingredients that you can whip up within minutes and tastes wonderful. Quick video, step by step pictures. It is one of the popular street side snacks in Tamil Nadu especially in Tea shops. Not only in tea shops, even in most of the restaurants, this medhu bonda will surely be on their evening snacks menu. The conventional bonda which is crispy and crunchy, this medhu bonda is crispy outside by inside will soft and delicious. The batter is similar to Medhu Vada. Some ingredients are different and also, medhu vada are donut-shaped snacks whereas medhu bonda is more bulgy round ball shape.  If you have added more water and the batter has a medium consistency, then to thicken it, you can add a little rice flour or fine rava. Serve immediately while hot or warm with coconut chutney or any chutney of your choice.

How to make Ulundu Bonda / Urad Dal Bonda/ Tea Time Snacks Recipe

  1. Take urad dal, chana dal or yellow split dal wash twice and soak together for 2 hrs.

  2. In a mixie jar add dry red chillies and pulse grind to make flakes.

  3. Add fennel seeds grind to coarse powder.

  4. Add soaked lentils without water.

  5. Grind them all in to slightly thick and little coarse batter.

  6. Vigorously mix the batter continuously for 5 minutes.

  7. To check the batter consistency, take a little batter and put in the water it should be float on it.

  8. Add chopped ginger.

  9. Add chopped curry leaves and coriander leaves.

  10. Add chopped onion.

  11. Add salt to this batter.

  12. Mix everything well.

  13. Take a batter by a wet hand to drop bonda in to a hot oil.

  14. Heat a pan with oil for frying.

  15. Drop one by one slowly. Do it in batches to avoid overcrowding.

  16. After 1-2 minutes slowly flip to cook evenly.

  17. Fry until reach crispy golden brown.

  18. Super tasty and crispy evening snack / medhu bonda is now ready for serving.


  1. Beat the batter for 2 to 3 minutes to get an airy batter, which will result in crispy & fluffy bondas. 
  2. If the water content is less, the bonda will turn hard and dry.
  3. If the water continent is high in batter add little rice flour in to it.
  4. Making small sized bondas and cooking in low or medium flame ensures cooking from inside.
  5. Add bondas over medium high heat but then reduce heat & deep fry them over medium low heat for that crispy texture.
