Chettinad chicken gravy is a popular chicken dish all over south india. Chicken chettinad is a classic dish from the chettinad cuisine. It consists of chicken cooked in, turmeric and a paste of red chillies, kalpasi, coconut, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, black pepper, onions, ginger, garlic and gingelly oil.

This curry has lots of freshly roasted spices and coconut which is then ground to a fine powder and added it to the chicken. This is close to authentic chettinad chicken dish with similar taste, flavor and color.

Traditionally it is ground spices using ammi kal but these days we grind the masala in mixie. However authentic Chettinad chicken curry is the best one to go with. Now let’s see how to prepare Chettinad chicken curry.

  1. Frist clean the chicken.

  2. To prepare the coconut masala pate add grated coconut & poppy seeds in the blender .Grind a fine paste using 1/4 cup water.

  3. Heat the pan with temper add crushed fennel seeds , black stone flower, dry red chilies & curry leaves. sauté until turns light golden color. 

  4. Add chopped onion , Sauté until translucent.

  5. Add ginger garlic paste , Sauté until raw smell goes off . While sauté add little Kashmiri red chili powder & turmeric. 

  6. Once the raw smell goes add  kulambu masala powder & chili powder, sauté in medium flame for few minutes.

  7. Now add Chicken , mix it well.

  8. Now add chopped tomato & required salt , mix it well . Cover & cook in medium flame for 5 to 6 minutes in medium flame.

  9. In this stage add required water , Cover & cook  until chicken cook well.

  10. Once the chicken is cooked well add coconut masala paste , special chettinad masala powder  & pepper powder.

  11. Also add little ghee for taste.  Then cook another 3-4 minutes .

  12. Finally add chopped coriander & curry leaves then switch off the flame.

  13. Yummy chettinad chicken curry is ready to serve.


  • Instead of kulambu podi you can use 1 tbsp chili powder ,2 tbsp coriander powder , 1 tsp cumin seeds powder.
  • Instead of Chettinad masala powder you can use garam masala powder too.
  • Adjust the chili powder & pepper powder as you like. I made little Spicy curry .
  • Instead of poppy seeds add 4-5 cashew nuts.
