Fish curry are usually tamarind or coconut based curries. In village side , they make fish kulambu with just shallots and tamarind with tomatoes and ground coconut milk in it. Today i have shared a spicy and tangy fish kulambu recipe with the addition of raw mango & Drumsticks that enhances the taste.it is perfect for idly, dosai and Hot steamed rice. Mathi/sardine is one of the best fish variety and easy to obtain in India.

Sardines are small, oily fish is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus sardinella. It is one of the two most important commercial fishes in India(with the mackerel). The Indian oil sardines is called “mathi” or “chaalal” in Tamil. It is commonly called as “mathi” or “kavalai” “chaala” in Kerala. It is called “buthai” in Tulu Mangalore -Udupi region. Sardines are naturally oily, contain small bones & have a strong fishy taste. A few popular methods like Fry, Grill, Pickle them, Curry, or use them in combination with strongly flavored ingredients Sardines are rich in nutrients that are essential for good health.

  1. First Marinate mathi meen with turmeric & Rock salt

  2. Heat the clay pot with gingelly oil.

  3. Temper with items given in the list for to temper. Wait until splutter.

  4. Add crushed garlic sauté for about 1 minute.

  5. Now add onion .Add onion sauté it until onion just turns golden color and add required salt

  6. While sauté add green chilies too.

  7. Add Smashed Tomato & Drumstick ,saute another 2-3 minitues.

  8. Now add Turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, fennel seeds powder & cumin powder.

  9. Sauté the masala in medium flame until raw smell goes as well as oil separates. make sure masala won't burn.

  10. Now add tamarind extract .

  11. Add required water. I added 6 cup water.

  12. Add required salt & curry leaves.

  13. Cook the kulambu about 5-8 in medium flame.

  14. Add coconut milk then cook until oil separates.

  15. Once the oil separate as well as kulambu also little thick add mango & fish.

  16. Once the add fish keep the flame in medium low. cook another 5 minitues.

  17. Finally add coriander & curry leaves  then switch off the flame.

  18. Serve this kulambu after 2-3 Hours the taste will be good.

Note

  • You can use any other fish of your choice also.
  • Use only gingelly oil/sesame oil for fish kulambu.
  • Do not stir the kulambu after adding the fishes, the will break.
  • Don't over cook the fish.
  • Raw mango & drum stick is optional.
